Disk defragmenter causes computer to stop responding!

I've been trying to solve this problem but nothing have
helped so far.

When I run my disk defragmenter the computer suddenly
freezes and stops responding to everything.

I put the Power Scheme to 'Always on' in the Control
Panel under Power Options because I thought it was the
harddrive 'slowing down' that caused it.

Any help regarding this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is the drive very full? The built-in defragger requires some empty space
to work efficiently. Various third party defragger may not need as much
free space. Otherwise, perhaps the harddrive has a problem? Have you run
chkdsk on it lately?
