Hi.. I think this goes in Hardware, I'm not really sure.
I currently have a HP Pavilion 762n with Windows XP and
Service Pack 1. Just a couple days ago Disk Defragmenter
wasn't working. It would get a couple percent done and
then cause Windows to crash. Yesterday it didn't crash,
the screen just went blank as if there were a blank
screen saver on and then there's nothing left that you
can do other than reboot the computer manually. I've
tried multiple things trying to figure out how to get it
working again, with no luck. I have also tried a couple
other disk defragmenting programs such as Diskeeper 8.0
and Disk Mechanic Pro(?). Also, I don't know that this
would've worked anyway, but I copied the Disk Defrag
files onto a floppy and then replaced them with the same
files from another computer. If possible I would like to
avoid Reformatting the Hard Drive. Any help acceptable.
Please Help, Thank you.

You could try to use the system restore in Windows to a
day before you were encountering this issue.

I cannot do this due to the fact that System Restore is
not working. It goes through the Restore process, but
when windows boots back up it says that it could not
restore your computer to the earlier time, no changes
were made to your computer. This is why resorted to a Non-
Destructive System Recovery. After this was done disk
defrag worked once and is now doing what it had been
doing before, which was causing windows to crash or hang.
Any Ideas? Please Help!

Try a Repair Operation instead:

Boot off your XP CD, choose to install to the same drive/partition as
your current XP Installation, then choose R to repair. Windows should
automatically fix itself ;)
