Hi,

My parents in law have just had their hard drive break on them and it seems
that whilst the company that built their computer included all the disks they
didn't include an XP Home Product Key. Are there any records anywhere that
would prove that they own the licence? They have the CDs and the product key
for Works 2002 which was installed at the same time.

Thanks for any help,

Greg

You'll have to contact the company that built the computer
and ask them for the Product Key. If you are unsuccessful
with that endeavor, then you'll have to purchase a new "Full
Version" of Windows XP.

The product key should have been attached to the package that contained the
XP installation disks. There might also be a COA sticker attached to the
computer case that contains the product key.

Unfortunately, there is no record where the product keys are retained. Since
this was likely an OEM version of XP, the vendor is totally responsible for
any support issues. Your best bet is to contact the maker of the PC.

Thanks for the quick reply. That's what I was afraid of. They got the
computer built by a local shop that has now gone out of business. I'd heard
that you could get the licence details off the disk somehow but seeing as
that's just a paperweight now I wondered if there was some Microsoft list
somewhere. Bother.

Go to google.com, search for a program called XP Key finder.
It should give you the key from those Windows.

Um.........If the "OP's" drive is dead, then they don't need a key now do
they? Um..... A key won't work worth a damn on a dead drive.
Um.......Ok?

Um, ....... I seem to recall the original post said "My parents in law have
just had their hard drive break on them" - which appears to mean it's
unaccessable. Does that answer all your questions?

I would have thought that was quite obvious!

If I'd known that they didn't have their key I'd have got it from that
program but you never know what you're missing until you need it do you? At
least it's reminded me to back everything up :)

Thanks for everyone's help.
