disk cleanup

i am trying to run my disk clean from windows xp home and it asks which drive
do i want to clean i say "C" and click start the program starts the green
indicator moves a little then does nothing, have left it running for hours
and nothing can someone help to figure out how to restore this program
without the xp disk?
