Hi,

When I run System Tools>Disk Cleanup, I get a window that
says "Disk Cleanup is calculating how much space you will
be able to free up on hard drive C:. This make take
several minutes." But the window never goes away. When
I press cancel, I then have to manually end the process
in the Task manager.

Thank you,

Charles

Try the following web sites for troubleshooting suggestions:

Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Line #48. In the right-hand window, click on
"Disk Cleanup - Compress Old Files Freezes"

Simply click on Kelly's fix, download the registry fix, then run it.
(Note: Disable your antivirus program before running the repair script)

Hi Charles...
That's the exact same problem I'm having, and like you I
entered a post to see if I could get some help. I went
into the knowledge base and found that this is a pretty
common problem. Supposedly it is caused by a corrupted
register key in the disk clean up utility. I found
instructions for going into regedit and fixing it, but
the instructions are somewhat confusing, and I'm kind of
afraid of ruining something. I've found out that you can
back up the key incase something goes wrong, but I can't
quite figure out how to do it. You're supposed to go
into regedit (through 'Run') and delete the
key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Explorer\Volume Caches\Compress Old Files. But
once I get here it says to click the "TestSubKey" subkey,
and Rt. click the "TestDWORD" Dword value, delete and
confirm. I've yet to find the TestSubKey!
The instructions can be found at this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;812930&Product=winxp. If you click on "256986
Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry" you will
find more detailed instructions on it.
Let me know if you can figure this out. My post is here
also under mitch0401. I'd appreciate it if you let me
know if you can figure this out!
