Disk Cleanup won't work

Whenever I try and run disk cleanup it pops up with it's
first window which says, "Disk Cleanup is calculating how
much space you will be able to free on (C:). This may take
a few minutes to complete.
[Calculating..]
[Scanning: Compress old files]
It stops there and sits there in the same spot, and will
do nothing but that. If then I press 'Cancel' the window
will close, but if I do Ctrl+ALT+DLT it still shows it
running in the background taking up a percentage of my
resources.
How can I fix this?
