Disk Cleanup program hanging

I perform and run the disk clean-up maintenance program at least once a week. For about two weeks now I've tried to run the program and it just hangs. I've left it for couple hours just to see if it would ever finish, and it still shows that its calculating. Prior to this it would only take a minute or two tops. Anyway, If I decide to stop it, quite a bit of time passes until it quits. To make matters worse, If I've attempted to start any other programs while it is quitting, the problem is only compounded. I've actually had to shut the computer off without going through the shutdown procedure.

Has anyone seen this before? If so, what would cause the problem? And, how do I cure it?

For your first problem, Microsoft KB 823302 describes a Disk Cleanup problem
like yours if you have a corrupt temporary file.
The MS solution is:
Start, Run %temp%.
When the current user temporary folder opens, use Edit, Select All.
Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
In Internet Options, general tab click on Delete files and then select
the Delete all offline content.

{For a more detailed procedure see the KB}

For your second problem, it is likely the cleanup manager is not closing
when you cancel. Bring up Task Manager, Processes. You will likely see the
manager using about 99 percent of your CPU. Just select the manager and
click on End Process.

Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.

Don MI,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for my ignorance. But, what is Microsoft KB 823302?

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article KB 823302. Sorry, I should have given you
the complete link not just the number:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823302

In general at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx you enter KB plus
the number in the search box and go to the Knowledge Base article. You can
also search for specific problems and solutions

Jupiter Jones posted a link to another article on Disk Cleanup hanging. I
guess one of the two should work for you. I had a recent Disk Cleanup hang
problem and KB 823302 was the approach that fixed my problem.
