Disk cleanup hangs

I am running W2K sp4. When I try to run disk cleanup, it only goes as far as "scanning: compress old files". I have let it run for as long as 10 minutes without any change. I have used Norton clean sweep to remove old files, etc, so I know there is't a large quantity to scan. This doesn't interfere in any way with using my computer, but I am always paranoid when there are problems with Windows.

Any suggestions

This is a v-e-r-y slow program. On my system, it takes 12 to 15 minutes to finish scanning, and I'm only about a third full for disk space.

I tend to leave it overnight because it can take a VERY long time, depending
on when you last performed it.
