Disk cleanup hangs up

I'm running XP Home SP 1. When I run "Free up space on your hard drive"
cleanmgr.exe immediately takes up 97-98% of my CPU (i.e. 100% is taken) and
stops.

When I run "Rearrange Items..." i.e. defrag, it stops at 25% while
analyzing.

I've run my anti virus - AVG - and my anti-spy ware - Spybot search and
destroy - several times since removing a trojan (don't remember which) and
several spywares. This has not helped.

In a reply to another person, someone recommended reloading defrag.exe (I
believe) from the XP CD. I can't find MY XP CD so I brought home one from
the office. Can I reload from that one or can I reload from the CAB files?
Not really sure why I can't find my CD, maybe I was supposed to make one
from the CAB files.

Any suggestions?

try emptying out these folders first

start>run and type

%HOMEPATH%\Local Settings\Temp
and
%HOMEPATH%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
and
%SYSTEMROOT%\Temp

Ok, I got the Reg_edits file and opened it in Notepad. Am I supposed to add
that line somewhere in the system register? And if so, with or without the
[ ] at each end of the line.

PS - I have emptied my temp directories previously, except for 2 files
located in the Content.IE5 folder that will not delete. They are both HTML
Docs with very strange addresses.

example: 1470140593@top,top2,top3,topleft,topright, etc. They are 1KB in
size but if I open in Notepad, they are blank.

Try double clicking the file or right click and choose merge.

Sorry, but all I get is an error message: "This file does not have a
program associated with it for peforming this action. Create an association
in the Folder Options control panel."

Yesterday I managed to do a diskcheck - a few hours. Thre were about 20
file record segments that were unreadable. Diskcleanup and defrag still
hang so I guess chkdsk didn't fix those problems.
