Disk Cleanup ... doesn't

I wish to expunge some of my old System Restore backups, so I went into Disk
Cleanup. I start it, but it freezes at the following box:
Disk Cleanup is calculating how much space you will be able to free on
My Laptop (C:). This may take a few minutes to complete.

Calculating ...
[progress bar at about 7%]
Scanning: Compress old files

I let it sit for almost half an hour, and nothing. This is its usual
behavior on my machine. Any ideas? Can I safely erase System Restore backups
independently of Disk Cleanup? Many thanks for your help.
 
You can disable system restore, reboot, and reenable it. All previous
restore points will be deleted.
