Disk access when idle

Using WinXP Pro on a PIII. Dual boot with Win 98 SE.

This issue only occurs with the WinXP Pro.

The question was originally posted in 2002 and the only answer was that this
is NORMAL?

IS IT?

Whenever my computer is left idle for 20 minutes or so,
the hard disk starts thrashing like you wouldn't
believe; it doesn't stop until I perform some activity.

I've been searching for ways to fix this and I can't find
anything. I don't see any program that is running that
would be causing this to happen. It can't be the
indexing service, because I checked that and it's
disabled.

Thanks in advance,

From what I've read, Windows, during idle times, may rearrange files on the hard drive for
boot optimization and/or application launch optimization.

Don't think that is the siiue in my case, I routinely clear the cache, temp
files and defrag.
Did disk maintenance per your suggestion, again, and same scenerio exists.

Just decided to put PC in STANDBY if I am going to leave awhile (after I
back up my data of course).

If you run a product like filemon (http://www.sysinternals.com) there are always various
disk I/Os occurring in the background (Norton AV, etc.).

Yes. Put on standby to spindown the hard drive(s).

The hysteria over defragmentation isn't worth the trouble of doing one. I would do one if
I deleted a TON of large files, but with modern hard drive access times (random < 15
milliseconds), it's moot.

I agree about Defrag Hysteria. Didn't notice the "Dual Boot" line in the OP,
just know some users don't know it (Defrag) even exists. And lots of folks
have TONS of TIF's by the time I see them. Obviously not his problem, on 2nd
read.
Newbies don't dual boot.
