Nick

I have noticed that many people are posting from the domain
@discussions.microsoft.com What does this signify?

Nick

It signifies they are using the quirky web interface instead of a
proper newsreader.

....Alan

Alan,
I'm not sure if you are correct. I'm posting from OExp with that domain.
Right, I got it at a MS MVP page (sorry, don't remember the owner)
in a 'how-to create a MS newsgroup account in OE'.
Regards.

Based on the properties of your post, you are actually posting from:
NNTP-Posting-Host: bl5-9-108.dsl.telepac.pt 82.154.9.108

You are simply using a fictitious e-mail address containing the domain name,
"discussions.microsoft.com".

Yes, David, you are correct. But my reply to Alan was based on his assertion
answering Nick. I was/am not posting from a web interface but from a
"proper" news reader.
Regards.

The use of a fictitious e-mail address is highly recommended when accessing
these newsgroups via an NNTP server, but you have chosen a format that uses the
default domain that is used to access the MS web interface version.

Nothing wrong with that approach, but at first glance it does give a reader the
impression that you are using a browser to access the newsgroup and most people
that do use a browser are newbies and have a hard time finding responses to
their query.

Alan's comment was correct, but maybe he should have prefaced his statement with
something like this, "Normally it signifies......". This would then cover your
condition.

I am using not a fictitious email address but one which is an "alias" of my
primary email address as obtainable through Yahoo.

It protects my identity - but should I receive too many spams to the alias I
will just simply change to another alias - fortunately I have not had to do
that yet.

As I use this email address only for posting to newsgroups the only people
that will use it are people responding occasionally personally to my
postings (and I will recognise the subject matter) or they have been trawled
for spam.

Nick

Again, correct. If he had, I would had passed.
But again, it was for a possible Nick's misunderstanding.
"No problema" with people thinking I'm using or not a browser as, in fact,
I'm a newbie.
Regards.

Thanks David.
Yes, I should have added a "normally" in (and normally would) but I
guess I was rushing and didn't anticipate it would cause such a
controversy.

....Alan

I am not quite sure what "misunderstanding" I demonstrated.

Not understanding is not the same as misunderstanding - on that basis
everyone who posts a question to this group "misunderstands".

I simply asked a question because I didn't understand about
@discussions.microsoft.com.

Nick

Nick,
misunderstanding: a failure to understand or interpret correctly.
Where did I said *you demonstrated* a misunderstanding ?
I even did not reply to your post but Alan's,
due to the formulation of his answer to your post.
It was that absolute formulation that could make you misunderstood
(fail to understand or interpret correctly) the real fact, that is
@discussions.microsoft.com does not mean *always* one is using web interface
instead of a proper newsreader or, as David put it, and Alan agreed,
<quote>normally it signifies</quote> one is using web interface
instead of a proper newsreader.
Regards and, for me, end of thread.

I think David had cleared all, Alan
