Where does one set a time out for no activity on the internet so that my dial out
hangs up?

My Computer > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click on your ISP,
left click on Properties, choose Options Tab, enter Idle time before hanging
up, Click OK.

Thanks. Interestingly, it looks like I set it some time ago for 20 minutes. I've
never seen it disconnect me. I wonder if it has something to do with firewalls, or XP
or some application rattling around trying to get out for confirmation of something?

You may have something running in the background, perhaps some spyware.
Bring up the task manger by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del and see what is running.
Problem is, you may not understand what should be running and what shouldn't
be running. It's very cryptic. Mine does disconnect but not by my wishes. My
ISP is Earthlink and I get treated to disconnects frequently, sometimes two
minutes apart during peak hours. While writing this it disconnected four
times.

Maybe EL could average this out between us. :-)I use them too.

One thing I could try is to block all connections for 20 or so minutes with my McAfee
firewal and see if it shuts down.
