My disc defragmenter stops partway through the Analyse
stage, and says there is a corrupted file. It's a non-
essential data file, so I have tried to remove it via
Windows Explorer but it won't let me, saying "Cannot read
from the source file or disc." How do I work around this?

Run Error checking first! Reboot. Then try to run Defrag again.
Defrag has problems with corrupted files.

Scandisk is now Error-checking (chkdisk).
Open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Right click your hard drive | Properties.
On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
Under Check disk options, check both boxes.
You have to *reboot* for Error-checking to run.

For a peek at the log.
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | OK
Look in Application | Listed as Information
under Winlogon, Event 1001

Many thanks. That certainly solved my problem, which
makes me very happy, as I couldn't find anything re this
in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

The Chkdisk found about 25 bad clusters, which it
replaced. Do you know whether that's typical or could my
HDD be on the way out? It's about 75% full, and has
started getting a bit noisier in recent times.

Noise is not by itself conclusive, however the damaged clusters could be the
sign of a problem.

The manufacturer of your hard drive probably has free diagnostic tools on
their web site. I would run those tools as soon as possible.

Spydah;

What Rocky said.

Here's something to keep in mind
..
[[A volume must have at least 15% free space for defrag to completely and
adequately defragment it. Defrag uses this space as a sorting area for file
fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, defrag will only
partially defragment it.]]

And here's a couple of articles. Help and Support is also useful. :-)
