What would cause a restore point I created yesterday (and
for that matter all previous restore points) to disappear
from from my list of created restore points? I always get
the message "no previous restore points"
Thanks!
If you can, please email (e-mail address removed)

Hi,

Make sure that you have enough hard drive space allocated for your system
restore points.
To check, go right click your My Computer and then scroll down to
Properties.
Now click on the System Restore Tab, and then look at the slider and try
sliding the slider to the right so that more disk space is available.

Disk cleanup has an option when you are an administrator
to clear out every restore pojnt except for the last
one. That could have been done. Although I think it is
more related to how much fre space you have as the other
person said.

Do you have Real Player media player on your computer??
A complete loss of restore points after launching Real
Player is a known problem and is discussed in one of
Microsoft's knowledge base articles. I know because I
experience the same problem from time to time and have
researched the problem extensively. Real is aware of the
problem, is not quick to admit it, and has no fix for the
problem at this time. This will not occur on all
computers running XP, but is more prone to happen if you
have had to reinstall the operating system following a
crash. There is a basic conflict between the way Real
Player stores those ads that you see in the Real Player
history files and the way that System Restore monitors
those files for changes so that it can create a "System
Checkpoint." If you know how to do so, check your Error
Logs for more detailed information as to what occured
when the loss of restore points happened. The notations
may say something like "the system encountered the
unexpected error code xxxxxxxxx (could be one of several
codes) while monitoring file "advertising.lnk"
or "untitled clip" (these and others are the names Real
Player gives to the ads it stores in it's own history
files). I could go on forever because I've accumulated a
lot of info. on the problem, but the bottom line is that
if Real Player is causing the loss of restore points, you
are simply going to have to find a way to live with it
(as I have by not launching Real Player for a few days
after making computer changes - to see if they work or
not and whether I'll need to use System Restore to undo a
change I've made), never use Real Player until a fix is
found, or uninstall Real Player completely. Good luck.
