Disappearing IE & Outlook

Hello -- on a recent reinstall, I was patting myself on the back for doing it
all just right when suddenly Internet Explorer disappeared. Currently I am
able only to access the Internet by first going to Windows Update. Outlook is
also a problem. Machine must be rebooted if the monitor shuts down (set for
shutdown after 4 hours, no other down options), in order for Outlook to be
able to connect to mail server.

My small network works fine. I suspect this may be a program installed that
is usurping proxy rights, but do not know where to find the problem. The IE
program simply is not there on the computer any more.

As best I can determine, the problem began when I installed an e-Fax trial
that was part of the gratis software I was given with my modem. I uninstalled
it, but the system did not restore.

Will appreciate any suggestions that do not involve reinstalling the system.

Well, it sounds like IE is still installed and working, but the Desktop icon
disappeared. Try:

Go to Windows Update, click Tools and select Internet Options. Click the
Advanced tab and check the box for Show Internet Explorer on the desktop.

If that doesn't work, create a shortcut to C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe.

Thanks, Doug...all that is in the Internet Explorer folder under C:\Program
Files is hmmapi.dll <and> iedw <plus four folders. The program itself is
gone. I did a file search and it does not appear except for the exe for
Windows Update. I did make a shortcut and forced it to find the program. That
shortcut WILL access the internet, but you cannot click on anything, and you
cannot change the page by entering another web address. It either locks up or
just simply closes without notice.

On your other suggestion, did you mean to type something other than "Windows
Update" -- I did check IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced, but find no
such radio button in those choices. I went to Windows Update (takes you to
the website), but did not find any options as you described, so thought you
probably meant the option in Internet Explorer.

Anyway, thank you for your suggestions...I of course will try anything to
avoid the dreaded reformat, reloading system, and all the programs.

Hmmm - if Windows Update opens, then IE is somewhere on your hard drive. Do
a file search for iexplore.exe and create a shortcut on your desktop.

Windows Update is a program all of its own called wupdmgr.exe -- it just
happens to access the Internet via Windows own browser. I must assume that IE
is integrated into the program itself. I have done such a search, which is
how I learned IE disappeared. I found an icon on my old backup drive, moved
it to my desktop, and forced a search for the source program. It failed. I
also did the conventional search for "all files and folders."

Keep thinking, and thanks!

Well, try Add/Remove Programs - Windows Components, and see if you can
uninstall/reinstall it - you will need the XP CD.

If that doesn't work, MS recommends a full system file checker scan; and if
that doesn't work, a full XP repair install:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

Also, if you can get to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-
b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en , you can download and save ie6setup.exe to
a hard drive. Then run:

<path>\ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd /D:1"

This will save the full IE 6.1 installation to your hard drive and you can
attempt to install it from there, but you might have to edit the registry
per the KB article.
