hello all,

in WZCZ, at the end, users can simply press the 'print network
settings' button to the see the passphase. is there any way to disable
this? users should not know the passphase for security reasons.

TIA

What button are you talking about? I use Windows to manage my wireless
config, and the passphrase is masked, and there's no such button.

Let me try to clarify:

1. Double click the wireless icon at the systray (lower right corner)

2. Choose 'Set up a wireless network for a home or small office'

3. Select/fill all the appropriate settings as you keep clicking
'next'.

4. The final windows is titled as 'The wizard completed
successfully'. There is a button titled 'Print Network Settings' on
that window.

If you click on that button, it launches notepad with the all the
settings of wireless network, including the passphase key printed in
the CLEAR for all to see, including end users. This is NOT how it
should be.

TIA again.

OK - sounds like you're using one of the myriad wizards I've never touched.

Well, if that's how it is, that's how it is, and nobody in a newsgroup is
going to be able to change it. The simple answer might be, don't use the
wizard. There's no need....I've never heard of it & have been configuring XP
for wireless networks for a long time now.

Yeah yeah, the M$ way or the highway yeah? Shaft it to the consumer
eh? Dumb M$, real dumb.
[rant off]

of all the numerous ways to configure a wireless network, I have found
the steps I have outlined above to be the least error prone, & least
time consuming, if you happen to have over 100 notebooks to configure.

while I can understand that button provides end-user an easy means of
backing up their own settings, I would also certainly appreciate the
option (regedit hack, GPOs) to disable that particular button.

Anyway Lanwench, thanks for your replies so far.

Well, nobody's holding a gun to your head & making you use Windows, right?

NB: If you're on a W2003 domain, you can use group policy for this. If you
aren't, I'm sure there are other ways to mass-deploy the settings.

No prob. Sorry I can't help further; I'd really never even heard of that
wizard before.
