this is how I stopped windows messenger 4.7 from loading-from techtv tips
Dave from Spencer, Massachusetts called asking how to disable the Messenger
built into XP. He's getting screen spam every time he goes online.
Microsoft includes Messenger as a feature of Windows 2000 and XP.
Unfortunately, spammers have figured out how to use it to their advantage.
Here's how to turn it off in XP.
Right-click My Computer and click Manage.
Fold out the Services and Applications option and click Services.
Right-click the Messenger entry, select Properties, and choose Disable under
Startup Type.
Click OK.
Don't touch anything else in the Services menu unless you know what you're
doing
