Under "My network places" there are a bunch of connections that are no
longer valid. How can I make this behave like win98 where invalid
connections disappear automatically, and all connections disappear after
reboot?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for posting here.

From your post, my understanding of this issue is: You want to know in
Windows XP how to remove the invalid shortcuts under My Network Places
automatically, and remove all shortcuts after reboot. If this is not
correct, please feel free to let me know.

As far as I know, your needs cannot be answered, however, you may refer to
the following Microsoft Web site to prevent the shortcuts from being added
or clear all existing shortcus:

Places

Hope this helps!

Have a nice day!

Thank you. However, this solution seems to work only on XP Pro since the
group policy editor is not in XP Home.

Is there an alternative solution that works for XP Home?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your update.

You may try to add a value as below under the following registry key (If
you cannot find this key, create this key first):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r

Name: NoRecentDocsNetHood
Type: Dword
Data: 1

Warning: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using
Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Hope this helps!

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,
