How can I disable ALL forms of Instant Messaging on WXP and/or W2K
desktop machines? We do not log onto a domain so it would have to be
at the local machine. Is there a port or protocol that can be disabled
by the local administrator? I would prefer a firewall not be the
solution.

Have you tried Add/Remove Programs and used the Add/Remove Windows
Components (for Windows Messenger) and Add/Remove Programs for any MSN/Live
Messenger?

Uh, no. Windows Messenger is only one form of Instant Messaging. I
want to disable ALL forms of IM including Yahoo!, Google, Trillian,
etc. The preference is to prevent future use of these programs. Group
policy is not an option since we do not use a domain yet. Local policy
would be acceptable and a command line option to block IM ports would
be even better.

Not all IM's necessarily connect on the same PORT or the same way (TCP or
UDP).
Plus they all may not integrate the same way in Windows. As long as user's
have the capability of Internet Download, Install on Demand, or Update from
Internet, they can undo anything you can block.

Best way is to remove all IM clients from your PCs

Windows Messenger is tricky to get rid of you cannot just use
Add/Remove programs, instructions are here.

It depends on how many instand messaging apps. you've installed. Check
each one and either disable or uninstall it.
