Hi there,
my Laptop which connects to the Internet through my small network - only my
PC and Laptop, and the Internet Connection on my PC is shared.

Now, whenever I do a search on my Laptop, it auto dials. This is driving me
crazy. I have un-ticked everything I could see about auto dialing and call
back and so.

I have read from the help that this feature is default whenever there's a
network present. But why does my PC never autodial whenever I do a search?

I will really appreciate ANY help regarding this. I do not want my Laptop
to dial unless I tell it to.

Regards,
Deon

Hi Deon,

Search Assistant will try to connect to http://sa.windows.com This is done
to check for updates to its features, tips, wording and etc. Not allowing
access can cause its own set of problems, usually a "A file that is
required........." error message.

You can stop the internet access by changing the search behavior to Classic
Search.

Or...

Use TweakUI, Explorer section to set Classic Search:

Kelly,
I have downloaded and installed on my Laptop - BUT no success. I have
also changed the options in classic search.
Why is it only my Laptop that auto dials on a search and not my PC?

Hi Deon,

Right click My Network Places/Properties/Advanced (top toolbar)/Dial-Up
Preferences/Enable Auto-Dial by Location/Uncheck all locations and check off
always ask me before auto dialing. Also, Disable autodial while I am logged
on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location for
which you want the automatic dialing feature to operate. Reboot.

Disable or Enable AutoDial (Line 91)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To view the list of names and addresses recorded by AutoDial, type the
following command at a command prompt: rasautou -s

To delete a name or address entry from the list: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Addresses

You can delete any TCP/IP addresses that you see under this key. Note that
AutoDial can use IP addresses, DNS fully qualified domain names (FQDN), and
NetBIOS names.

thanx again, Kelly. I asume I must do as you have suggested on my Laptop
- the one that dials to the Internet through my PC's shared connection.
