My laptop somehow got set up to a network and now it gives me an error that
tells me (This operation has been canceled do to restrictions in effect on
this computer. please contact your system administartor.) I am the
administrator.
my wife and myself are the olny ones that use this PC and I cannot figure
out how to get it out of this setup. I have tried everything.
Also I have tried to set this to a stand alone system and it always goes
back to a WORKGROUP setup this is driving me crazy can someone please help me
with this problem. I am running Windows XP Professional.
Thank you

What are you trying to accomplish when you get the (This operation has been canceled do to restrictions in effect on
this computer. please contact your system administartor.) message?

When do you receive the notice about the restrictions policy?

Also, even if a Windows XP computer is not part of a network at all, it
still uses a "workgroup" setup -- one in which you must specify a workgroup
name and computer name. This is opposed to a Domain set up (not an option in
XP Home), in which a computer gains it's network abilities and settings like
security and user policy restrictions from a central server. These options
are usually set at first-time setup, and doesn't need to be done again.

If you want to check the settings, you can look in the System Properties in
Control Panel, but there is a simple wizard which can guide you through the
settings. Head to:

Start > [All] Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard

That wizard will let you check the option that "This computer is not part of
a network." Just follow the wizard and you should be all set, network wize
at least.

Let us know more about the restrictions problem and we'll see what we can do.

I get this message every time I try to open a program on my desk top such as
mail or enternet or any other desk top program.

I get this error message everytime I try to open a programe on my desk top
such as outlook mail, or the enternet or any other program on my desk top.

Hi

Try the following:

Set two local Policies to "Not Configured".

1) Start > Run.
2) Type "gpedit.msc" [without quotation marks].
3) Click "User Configuration" > "Administrative Templates" > "System".
4) Double click on the following two policies and set them to "Not
Configured":

a) "Do not run specified Windows applications."
b) "Run only the allowed Windows applications."

Hope this helps.

I cannot run the "gpedit.msc" it still gives the admin error when I enter it
in the START>run.
is there a back door that will some how allow me to do something to fix this
problem.

Try from the Command prompt:

Either

1) Start > Run, type "cmd" or
2) Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
3) Type: gpedit.msc

If this did not work, try from the Safe Mode:

1) Restart the computer and keep hitting "F8".
2) Choose "Safe Mode" and log on as Administrator.
3) Follow the suggestions above and the ones in my previous post.

Hope these will work.
