DirectX 9 Games

I want to buy a game that requires DirectX 9, but my
hardware only supports DirectX 8.1, what will happen if I
try to play the game? My computer meets all the other
requirements, is this a big deal?

It will still work... however the programming or the bells and whistles of
the game used to make the game are for the next gen cards such as ati 9800
or nvidia fx series.
