I am running XP and have a directory that is giving me
some maintenance problems.

Running CMD and getting a directory listing shows the '.'
directory entry, then states 'File not Found'
(pressumably when looking for the '..' directory entry).

I am unable to delete this directory. It keeps saying
that the directory is not empty!

I am also trying to run CHKDSK but am receiving a number
of 'File record segment xxxxx is unreadable' messages and
then the computer just freezes!

How can I deal with this directory? (Any hopefully solve
the CHKDSK problem at the same time)

Any help greatfully appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Richard

Hi,

Windows XP comes with its advanced tools for checking the errors, defragmentation etc. You do not need to run them from the dos prompt. Right click on the hard disk and then choose properties and then in the tabbed window that appears choose Tools and then click the first button "Check this disk for errors".

You can also do a defragmentation.

I originally tried using CHKDSK at boot time, but this
freezes also.

Does Defrag work on a corrupted directory/file?
Wouldn't this just compound the problem?

I've tried to perform a defrag, but DEFRAG reports that
the system is scheduled to perform a CHKDSK and will not
run.

It suggests using CHKDSK /F, but when I try running this
from a DOS prompt, I get told that CHKDSK cannot perform
scan as another process is using the drive. CHKDSK then
asks if I want to schedule CHKDSK for when the system is
restarted!

There is already a CHKDSK schedlued at boot time, but
this NEVER completes (system freezes) and does not get
cleared to allow me to perform a DEFRAG!

Any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance
