I have been digging through many of the hardening INF
files, and I'm trying to figure out what each line does
and why I would want to implement it so that I can better
understand what's happening to my system.

Can you direct me to some place where I can find out
what's in all the system directories for Windows 2000?

Example, what's in system32\ias or system32\DTClog or
system32\dllcache?

Some directories allow user access, and I'd like to know
what's in these directories to know if I might want to
allow more or less access or to assist with tracking down
problems.

Any references would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Drive down to Redmond, find the Microsoft Campus and tell the
receptionist you have an appointment with the Windows 2000
development manager.
He will be able to explain everything you want ;)
If that fails I recommend to use Google and search for what you
are looking for, step by step.
Or even maybe http://www.microsoft.com/technet/ can help a bit.
