directories on C: are read only

A couple of weeks ago, my system disk failed. A local shop replaced it and
reinstalled my XP Pro with my account as the only account (and with admin
privilege).

Some of the applications directories have been set to read only and will not
allow me to change them back to normal read/write mode.

Is there some configuration item that has caused this?

Thanks,

Joe

Colin,

Thanks for the response.

What I have is a huge application directory that I restaged from backup
after a new boot drive was installed and XP was reinstalled.

The app didn't work; I needed to reinstall it to re-establish links with the
OS. Since its whole directory tree is read only, I was unable to reinstall
it there so I used one of the other storage devices.

Now, I want to get rid of about nine gigs of useless stuff on my C: drive.
(this a topographic map database and software that displays or prints maps)

I tried attrib on the high level directory and nothing changed. I went down
two levels and tried the same thing on a directory containing map images -
and attrib was denied access to the directory!!

Now what?

Never mind.

My problem was largely solved by the answer to an adjacent query regarding
'access denied'. The solution involved turning off simple file sharing and
taking ownership of the directory tree. This worked with the exception of
three files in a subdirectory which remain untouchable even though I became
their owner. Hmmm. Insubordination.

Thanks,

Joe

I ran into this problem under W2K and it turned out to be
a problem with my Administrator privileges. Once I
changed them I was able to turn off the read only
attribute. However, it just happened again on my wife's
laptop which runs XP Home. (The problem must be initiated
by a piece of software I'm running on her system as well
as mine - image files being uploaded while on vacation).
I can't find the privileges associated with Administrator
and can't change them. I found references to simple
sharing but am not sure how to turn it off. Are we
talking Network Sharing or Local Sharing? The latter
doesn't seem to be a productive place to look. All of
Drive C: is now read only.

Hi!

I have a very strange problem which I hope is related to this topic.

After I had to clean some trojans and such, I discovered that EACH AN
EVERY directory of mine, on each and every drive is marked read-only i
Explorer, while in the command line, they are not shown as read-only.
I was very happy to find the MS registry-solution mentioned above, bu
it does not seem to work for me.

The thing is, that in the Explorer, the directories remain read-only
and for this reason -at least I assume that this is what cause these
certain softwares don't work.

Could anyone help me?
Thank you
