Hi,

I want to connect my computer to my friends to share
files. I tryed to set up a new connection with the
wizard. I go to Control Panel>Network Connections>Create
a new connection. Then with the wizard Set up an
advanced connection. I want to click on the Connect
directly to another computer, but this is 'greyed' out
and I can click on it. My friends computer does have
this option available. What is wrong with my computer
and how can I fix it.

Thanks, I really appreciate it if comeone can help.

we would need a little more information to answer your
question. Is your friends computer in the same
room/building? - if you want a "direct connection", it
will mean using a crossover cable to physically connect
the two pc's and both of them will need network cards
installed. If you are in separate locations, you will not
be able to use a direct connection and it will mean going
over the internet, usually with a VPN which normally
entails having a suitable router at either end.

Give us some more details of your set up and someone will
probably be able to give you a definitive answer.

For simple file swapping I've had success with a crossover cable via the
printer ports, and running Total Commander, shareware, on both systems. The
help files even had pinouts for the cable so I was able to make one. It's
pretty lo-tech, but it Works like a charm, but it doesn't move the files
very quickly.

Then I got a 128 meg USB flash drive. It's fast and easy.
