Sorry for the off-topic question but how can I find out what version
of DirectX I have? I tried doing a file search but that didn't help.

Start | Run Dxdiag | click ok.
 
Click Start, Run and type dxdiag click OK. On the System tab, near the bottom, you will see the DirextX version.
