I cannot get windows updates either
I do not get the updates even though automatic updates is turned on. Direct

I was referring to the operating system. To Windows itself.

Would it be advisable to purchase a new XP home and install? THe computer is
4 years old. WE did have BSOD last year, and after system restore it was
never the same. However I could still down load from Microsoft. i hate to

If you have reason to believe that it is not a genuine copy of Home, then
yes. If it a hologrammed Microsoft cd then no. The check for genuine
software is new at the Microsoft download site and by Summer will be
mandatory before getting any upgrades, so the fact you have not seen it
before just means you are like the rest of us.

If you suspect that reading the XP cd is a problem, I would clean the cd
drive with an optical drive cleaning kit (Radio Shack is one place to get
them) and clean the cd with a soft cloth. Having said all that, once loaded
on the system, problems with XP cannot be the fault of the cd anymore unless
some program tells you to put the cd in the drive.

The advantage to buying a new copy of Home would be that XP has changed
massively in the past three years and all those changes would be on the cd.
However, you would have to buy the full version and not the upgrade version
in case you want to redo the whole operating system.

You may be experiencing a developing hardware problem, possibly with memory
or the power supply. You didn't give much detail about your computer,
brand, speed, size of hard drive, amount of memory. Please do so.

One other trick I suggest you try is to download the Upgrade Advisor (I know
you are not upgrading) from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx and run it.
The one on your Home cd is out of date. I think it will give you the list
of things on your computer that should be fixed (removed or updated) in
order to run XP even though you already are running it. That might turn up
some things without going through a lot of pain.
