Direct Cable Connect thru Parallel port: can't get it working!!!

Toshiba laptop = xpPro , Dell desktop = xpHome
I want to copy files from toshiba to dell.
I'm trying to Direct Cable Connect thru Parallel port:

I am calling the Toshiba the Host
and the Dell Guest.

I have been working on this for days now, and i am quite frustrated.
Any kind, patient, non-critical help,
would be greatly appreciated at this point.

Install IPX/SPX network protocol on both machings, Bind File sharing to the
protocol, Share the drives.

I have done something similar following the step by step directions at
ftp://ftp.lpt.com/parallel/DCC-SETUP.PDF XP to XP setup is near the end,
page 15.
