Difficulty Opening XL files

When I try to open XL files in My Documents, I get a message back saying that
"Paint cannot read this file. It is not a bitmap file or is a format that is
not currently supported."
The solution is to right click and then click on "open with" and click XL
but this is a bit of a drag. What do I need to do to get XL to open the file
in the first place?

Right the file > Properties > general Tab > Click the Change button > Choose
the Prgogram.
