I have been trying, unsuccessfully, for the past week to install Desert Storm II Back to Baghdad. Once the installation is complete, I press "play" to go into the game and it comes up with an error message saying: The instruction at "0x6ce247cf" referenced memory at "0x05b65f4c". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program

I have brand new pc that I purchased 3 weeks ago that has much more that the minimum requirements needed to run the game. Can anybody please tell me what the message means, and how to fix it? Your response will be much appreciated.

Hi Shona,

I checked the support site for DSII B2B which is at:
http://www.take2games.com/index.php...+to+Baghdad%2CPC%2CGathering%2Ccds2&p=support

.... however they don't have the system requirements listed at that page,
which I was looking for in order to confirm my suspicion that you are
using an onboard video card for a game which requires at least 32 MB
of Video RAM and are therefore running into a conflict.

Do you know what type of video card you have and how it compares
to the requirements of the game?

The recommended specification for the video card required to run the game is a Nvidia GeForce 4 video card or equivalent, which is the exact same as what I have on my pc. It's got me stumped!

Hi Shona,

Let's keep the video suspicion on the side for now then, and start with
some basic troubleshooting steps. Hope these help, post back if not. :-)

The most common causes for that problem can be solved with
these few steps. If the problem persists after you've tried these,
please post back and we'll try some more solutions. Good luck! :-)

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

4. Go to the Windows Update site for everything under Critical and
Recommended: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Some games
require a patch: http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

5. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html

This is from the readme.txt on back to baghdad II

on Disc 2. Run 'DXSetup.exe' to install to your system.

To uninstall from the Windows Start button, select
Programs-> Gotham Games-> Conflict: Desert Storm II->

Saved player profiles and games are created and placed in
the My Documents folder. (i.e. C:\Documents and
Settings\My Documents\Gotham\CDSII)

Hi Jimmy & Mikey

Firstly, thank you both for your help in trying to get this game working. Unfortunately I have exhausted all the options you've both given me and still no luck. I've downloaded and installed every update applicable to this pc but keep running into brick walls. I just don't know where to go from here. It's just frustrating to know I paid top dollar one month ago for a brand new pc that I'm having so many dramas with. I've been tempted to launch it through the window on many an occasion!!

The message that comes up now when I click PLAY after installation has changed slightly. It now reads: The instruction at "0x6ce247cf" referenced memory at "0x0116d778". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program

When I click OK, it comes up with another application error reading: The instruction at "0x77f580db" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program

I'm still stumped!

Hi Shona,

Sorry to hear that. :-s Which model GeForce 4 do you have
and how much memory is on it?

Click Start / Run / type: dxdiag
Click the Display Tab
Look under Device for the name and manufacturer
and amount of memory.
Look on the left side for your driver name / version

Post that information here, and we'll compare it to the requirements:
DirectX 9 compatible video card with 32Mb RAM
Hardware Transform and Lighting

Hi Jimmy S

I've had a look and this is what I've found, I hope you know what it all means because I'm pretty much illiterate when it comes to computer speak ;

Name: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8
Manufacturer: NVIDI
Main Driver: nv4_disp.dl
Version: 6.14.0010.4528 (English
Approx. Total Memory: 64.0 M

I really hope this helps

Shona.

Hi Shona,

There is a more recent driver available for you video card if you like...

Updating video card drivers can solve most gaming issues. Here's some
simple abc's to always keep in mind. a. Shut off download accelerators,
firewalls and antivirus programs when downloading or installing updates;
b. Check for game patches: www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a
c. Make sure you meet the game's minimum video and system requirements;
d. Check for known issues with your video card at the game's web site. :-)

1. Before you update your drivers, I recommend that you install DirectX 9.0b*:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/9/c/c9c8a1d4-7690-4c98-baf3-0c67e7f3751f/dx90b_redist.exe

Here are the steps I recommend you use to update your driver. If you've
never done this before I recommend you also look over the Installation hints
and Release Notes both of which are linked to from their download page.

2. Download the latest driver v. 53.03 for your Nvidia Card Win XP/2000:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_53.03

Win98/Me: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_53.04 (yes, it's .04 not .03)

3. Save the .exe driver in My Documents\My Drivers\Nvidia 5303

4. Restart the computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key
about once every second as it's rebooting to pick Safe Mode.

5. Click Start / (settings) Control Panel / System / Hardware
Device Manager / expand +Display Adapters / right click on
the adapter, pick "Uninstall", and click No if asked to reboot.

6. Use Control Panel / Add-Remove programs to uninstall the
previous driver (exe)software which may have been installed.

7. Restart the computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key
about once every second as it's rebooting to pick Safe Mode.

8. If Windows prompts you to install the adapter, click "Cancel".

9. Double click the 53.03 driver we saved to My Documents\
Drivers\Geforce folder in step 3 to install.it. If it complains about
Windows Logo Certification just click "Continue". This is normal.

10. After you reboot, go to Control Panel / Display / Settings and
choose 32 bit Color Quality, and 800x600 or higher Resolution.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Test your drivers using DXDiag: Click Start / Run / type: DXDIAG
Click the "Test" buttons in the Display, Sound, Music & Network Tabs;
If any of the Display options are Disabled and you cannot Enable them,
your most likely solution would be to update your Chipset Drivers as per
my website: http://www3.sympatico.ca/nibblesnbits/Video.html#v11

Your program might not support dual monitors, or "dual head" video cards
You can disable the extra video output in your display properties control
panel. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced.

Along with your Video card, Sound Cards, Motherboard Chipsets,
and Video Monitors may also require updated drivers. Even your
motherboard's BIOS may need to be updated for compatibility with
your Video card. These steps are listed at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

Perhaps the old Nvidia drivers did not completely uninstall. If that's the
case, use this utility to completely uninstall the drivers and go to step 7:
http://content.guru3d.com/index.php?page=detonatorrip&menu=0

The latest video drivers sometime don't work with a particular game.
(Check the Video suggestions in the readme.txt file in your game folder/CD)
If there's no suggestions, try an older (WHQL) driver, and/or if you still
experience problems try a Beta driver, or even an Omega driver instead:

BETA Drivers: http://download.guru3d.com/
OMEGA Drivers: http://www.omegacorner.com/

There you have it, if you have any questions feel free to post them! :-)

Hi Jimmy

Unfortunately I have some bad news. I followed all your instructions down to a tee, but still no luck. However, when I clicked on the icon, it came up with a new message reading: CDS II.exe - Unable to Locate Component. This application has failed to start because binkw32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem

I have since un-installed and re-installed DS II twice and the message still comes up. Since you've been so very helpful so far, I was wondering if you knew how to rectify this error :

Kind Regards
Shona.

Hi Shona,

Sorry to hear you're still having troubles. :-s

Installing BINK software may overcome that error:

Hi Jimmy

This time I have fantastic news! : ) The game is working! You wouldn't believe how simple it was to fix, let me explain. I have a remote control with my pc which can be used for the tv/dvd/music/printer etc with a receiver that plugs into a USB port. By unpugging the receiver, I was then able to play the game. The reason was that the remote control was trying to read the game but it wouldn't accept it. Here I was thinking I'd purchased a dud of a machine! Thank you for all your help over the past week and I have the latest and greatest software on my pc now thanks to all the upgrades I've been doing! Now I'm off to get good at DS 2 before my husband gets home

Thanks again
Shona.

The secret here Shona is to plug the remote control back in
when he's home and the remote to practice the game while
he's away. Once you've master it, suddenly discover the fix
and challenge him to a sporty game wagering some house chores. ;-)

I'm happy the solution has been found Shona. Enjoy the game!
