Can anyone explain what the differences are between a Restore Point and a
System State Backup?

TIA.

System State Backup is a file that will be created and
cannot be touched by system maintenance such as defrag or
disk optimizaiton like chkdsk and so on. System Restore
points will be deleted or removed at the drop of a hat and
certainly isn't reliable. You only have to look at the
number of posts about missing restore points. I use the NT
backup and have turned the System Restore off two years
ago. Have fun.
