What is the main difference between the professional and

In simple terms if you are on a LAN evironment,Offic, or a
server environment then Pro is the way to go. If you are a
stand alone home user with only one or two accounts then
save your money and use Home. PRO has extra tools like
Group Policy Editor, Internet Information Service, and
added security. Home can be modified a great deal and only
requires that you become more familiar with the registry.
IIS for instance can be added in HE. Most of the GPE stuff
that can be done in PRO can be done via registry edits in
HE. This is what I say PRO=Office HE=Home. Have fun.

Bout 100 bucks.
:)

If you have to ask, you probably don't need Pro. Pro primarily has more
security and networking options.

Greetings --

The two versions are identical when it comes to performance,
stability, and device driver and software application compatibility,
but are intended to meet different functionality, networking,
security, and ease-of-use needs, in different environments. The most
significant differences are that WinXP Pro allows up to 10
simultaneous inbound network connections while WinXP Home only allows
only 5, WinXP Pro is designed to join a Microsoft domain while WinXP
Home cannot, and only WinXP Pro supports file encryption and IIS.

"Which is better?" That depends entirely upon the uses to which
you put your computer, the network environment in which you'll operate
it, your specific security needs, and your level of computer
knowledge.
