Hi all... The strangest thing, my daughter's HP Pavillion
laptop runing XP, turns on but the screen does not come
on. It will not take any input from the keyboard, mouse,
etc. I even rebooted and tried to run the system restore
routine from the manufacturer's CDs and the laptop will
not respond. It is new and there has been no physical
damage done to it. I suspect a virus since antivirus
protection subscription had ellapsed. Any sugestions???
Thanks.

Question - if it's new why aren't you calling the manufacturer and invoking
the warranty?! I can tell you this is most likely a hardware issue and virus
activity is software - a virus cannot physically damage your computer.

I would first suspect something less sinister ... hardware fault? Was it
dropped? Battery still ok?

Suggest phoning HP support and they can walk through debugging steps,
and if necessary help you with how to return for repair.

I agree, if it's in warranty, don't waste your time messing with it. Use
what you paid for as it sounds like hardware failure anyways.

BTW, a virus CAN physically damage a computer. Not all, but some do so
intentionally.

Rick, I just can't see how this is possible. Could you please
explain or give me a reference point from which to research the
matter?

Hence my original comment, Bruce. It may damage the MBR, but I don't see how
it can physically 'kill' a drive beyond repair - it's only code after all...

FYI, with a few motherboard controls and BIOS (like mine), can be accessed
from windows. It is conceivable that a virus could cause my computer to cut
the power to my fans.
