Hello Just searched for a solution to this problem and find I'm not the only
one to experience it.............has anyone come across a solution since the
last mail was posted on 25th April 2007....................please!!!!!!!

You are probably behind a NAT device. Some kind of router, or other system(s)
that firewalls the port used by the Help and Support app to post your "Did
you know" items. You could create an 'exception' for the port if you wished.

Q308127 - How to Manually Open Ports in Internet Connection Firewall in
Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q308127

I've never looked into which ones it uses. Process Explorer would probably
tell you.

Hello Mark thank for your response to my query. I've accessed both of the
links you mentioned and have to admit after hours of trying them and being
the novice that I am I still haven't managed to sort out the problem. I do
have a wireless connection via a router and tried follow the microsoft
instrutcions but how do I determine what the port is? Unfortuanetly following
the second link and installing the program I still can't determine how to do
that. I would really appreciate any further instructions you can give me.

Regards Chris

There have been so many 'security improvements' since XP was developed, I
doubt there is any clear way to define the problem. At one time, simply using
the Security Tab of the browser Options, and the "Sites" button would allow
you to enter http://sa.windows.com into the list of trusted sites. Now it's a
different world. The burden of opening the Help and Support active link falls
to the user. There is a whole API of functions available (PC Health) for
customizing it. If you are going to go after the solution, I'm sorry to have
to say it's beyond 'novice level'.
In theory, anything initiated by your system should find the firewall and
router transparent. In practice, even Remote Assistance can have trouble, and
that (along with ASP.NET) has it's own 'user' in the system.

Hello Mark, thanks again for trying to help. I think I'll have to admit
defeat and leave it. I found some details on a Microsoft TechNet page and
followed a heading for the problem but it's more to do with disabling the
feature as opposed to enabling and it hasn't changed anything. Hopefully
there'll be a solution one day.

Thanks again
Chris
