Does anyone have information on whether SP1 will contain alternative English
dictionaries i.e. distinct from American English?

Thanks for your view Gary.

Have you any idea why the decision was made originally?

Two come to mind - an security issue whereby OE used Word's (or similar)
dictionary. - or bloody mindness a la Bush - my way or get stuffed.

The first should be easily overcome; the second never considered.

SP1 is not finalized yet, but my guess is that you will be disappointed.

Sorry, I don't have any special insight into why Microsoft did not
make additional dictionaries available.

Before the OP deserts to the competition, I should mention that one
of the regular responders in the Windows Live Mail (WLM) newsgroup
has come up with an easy hack to enable WLM to do spell checking in
UK English as well as Canadian English:

Go to \Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\Proof\prf0009\2, open
spell.ini and change lang=1033 to lang=2057 (for UK English).
For Canadian English, change it to lang=4105.
