Dial up

I'm working on a XP Home machine that I have thoroughly cleaned up.
Norton Antivirus, AdAware, Spybot, Pest Patrol. All updated and run.
Every time I reboot, the dialup connection comes up and has to be
cancelled 3 times before it will stay away. The only two suspects I have
are Norton Automatic LiveUpdate, and Windows Update Machine which I found
under RunServices. These people were already in trouble because they
hadn't been installing the updates when prompted. I hate to turn THAT
off. However, I don't think that OR Norton are supposed to initiate a
dialup connection. AIM is installed but set not to start with Windows,
and there's no indication that it is. Everything that's in msconfig and
the run keys in the registry is stuff I recognize.
So what's making the *%)!@* thing try to dial?

Hi,

Modem Automatically Attempts a Dial-Up Connection [Q316530]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316530

Generally attributed to spyware being installed.

It turns out it is Weatherbug, which is set up in preferences NOT to
dial. I'm not real fond of the free version of Weatherbug in the first
place, but some people think they just have to have it. I took it out of
the startup group and the problem went away. They'll just have to open it
manually when they want it running. Until I find a fix for it anyway.
Thanks... I had already read the article you pointed me to, but
nothing there had helped. I checked the registry and everything was like
it was supposed to be.

Go into IE tools > internet options > connections and select the
"never dial a connection". If you don't, IE will probably dial in
any time any applicaiton tries to establish a tcp/ip connection.
Just start your dialin connections using dun when you want to be
connected.

Agreed. That's the way I always did it when I had dialup. But some
people are just naturally opposed to "change".
"I open Outlook Express and it won't dial in!" --- sigh ---
