Hi there rik,

Download a tiny patch to disable auto dial in XP:

Suspect any program that looks for a Net connection - perhaps RealOne or
RealPlayer, Windows Updates, etc. Look to that program's configuration
for an option to "start when Windows starts" - or similar - and disable it.

Lacking that, click START|RUN and type "msconfig" (no quotes) <enter>.
Click the Start Up tab, and see if suspicious entries are shown. Try
UNchecking the box to the left of the suspect, then reboot. When a
warning prompt appears at start up, check its box, then click on OK. If
the item you unchecked turns out NOT to be the cause, recheck it.

To prevent any dialing, open Control Panel|INTERNET OPTIONS|CONNECTIONS
and tic "never dial".

Other suggestions:

Right click My Network Places/Properties/Advanced (top toolbar)/Dial-Up
Preferences/Enable Auto-Dial by Location/Uncheck all locations and check off
always ask me before auto dialing. Also, Disable autodial while I am logged
on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location for
which you want the automatic dialing feature to operate. Reboot.

To view the list of names and addresses recorded by AutoDial, type the
following command at a command prompt: rasautou -s

To delete a name or address entry from the list: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Addresses
