Hi there:

When trying to access the internet, my computer connects
to my ISP, but when I try to use IE6, Outlook, or even FTP
programs, the programs do not send/receive any data.

This problem just started up out of the blue. No internet
programs work at all, and we do not use a proxy or
firewall. Our operating system is Windows XP.

Please help! By the way, I am using a friend's computer
to post this message, as obviously my connection at home
doesn't work.

Thanks.

General troubleshooting: 1) scan with current antivirus using updated
definitions; 2) remove spyware with tools such as Spybot S&D
(www.security.kolla.de) and/or Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com); 3)
delete temporary and Temporary Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary
services/programs from running at startup. Also in your case, check the
cables to the Internet connection (since you give no details about how
you're connecting, I can't be more specific). After making sure the
computer is clean - does the problem persist? If yes, then post back
with details for more help.

No disagreement with the suggestion to run antivirus and spyware
checkers. Also, if you have restore points from a time prior to the
problem, this might be the time to see if Restore will put things to
rights. Start Menu \ Programs \ Accessories \ System Tools\ System
Restore
