The other day I updated my modem's driver (Conexant D850 56K) through MS updates. Since then everytime I dial to connect to the internet the sound is extremely loud. I tried going to System tools/ Hardware/ Device Manager/ Modem/Properties and turned the speaker volumn to off. It didn't change it still is very loud when I dial up.

How do I fix this

Hi,

In the modem properties, add M0 (that's M-zero) as a string to the
initializations.

You're most welcome.

Or perhaps better, L1 (L0 - off up to L3 - loudest). You do it in the
Modem's Properties - Advanced, putting it in the Additional
Initialisation commands pane
