Greetings,
Working with XP Pro, I thought I was having problems with my dialup
connection, so I was advised to run a "repair" from the XP cd which I did.
The problem now is that when I try to set up my dialup account with my isp,
when I get "in the wizard" to where there are three options on how to
connect to the internet, only one option is selectable, the other two are
grayed out. The only one that I can select or deselect is the broadband
network, which I do not have.I want to use the "connect using a modem". In
the device mgr.,it says that the modem is working correctly. I have been
advised that I need to do a complete format and XP reinstall, which I can
do, but I wanted to see if anyone out there had any different advice for me
before I go to all this trouble, time, etc.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Jim

You need to re-install your modem and drivers.. it should then show up in
the wizard options..

The problem could be that you had previously installed XP Service Pack
1 or 2 on the computer and then re-installed an earlier version of XP
from the XP CD. The solution to that problem is to re-apply the
service pack to restore XP to its later version.

Mike, I removed, installed, and tried to update the drivers on the modem, but
the problem still exists. I get to the same point in the wizard, and two of
the three options are grey. On my first post, I stated that in the device
mgr., the modem was working properly, does this tell you anything?
Thanks,
Jim

The problem started while in SP 2. When doing a "repair" from the cd, does
that remove SP-2? Do I have to download SP-2 all over again?

Yes - if you did a repair of WinXP, then you'll need to go to Windows update
and reapply all updates/fixes/security patches.
To save some grief in the future, get the full SP2 network version (if you
don't have broadband, see if a friend that does can assist) and build you a
slipstreamed version of WinXP SP2.

Yes.

Yes, I'm afraid so. You can get it through Windows Update, or you can
download it to a file on your computer and run that file to install
the service pack:

If you download the file, you'll be able to run it again in the future
without having to download it again.

Let me make sure I understand, are you guys saying that reinstalling SP-2
might solve my original problem with the modem(if that was the problem)? I
was running XP Pro SP-2 when the problem started.

No, I'm not saying that. Reinstalling SP-2 should fix the new problem
(missing options for connecting to the Internet) caused by
reinstalling XP from CDs on a system that had already had service
packs installed.

If you'll post a news group message with details of the original
problem, someone should be able to help solve it.

What I may try to do is this, the problem computer is at work, and there is
only dialup service there, however I do have dsl at home and since the only
option on the problem computer is to connect with a broadband connection, I
can bring that computer home and download SP-2 at home. In one of the
previous posts, someone suggested downloading SP-2 to a file. How do I do
that? Does all this make sense?
Thanks,
Jim

Here's the web site to download SP2:

You could download it to your home computer, write it to a CD, and
take it to work. Or, you could bring the work computer home and
download it to that computer through an Ethernet connection to DSL.

Steve,
Well, I think it turns out that I may have to format and reinstall XP
afterall. I brought the problem work computer home and tried to set up a dsl
connection with it and it did not work. I was on the phone for quite a while
with DSL support and we went thru everything that we could think of
including updating drivers on the network card (which may be the original
problem) and system restore, which did not work either. I am now trying to
figure out how to backup everything and copy to cd (where can I get help on
this!) in preparation for a hard drive format. I may wait until tomorrow
when I know I can get some good help in person, unless I can figure this
backup out, so if you have any additional ideas, now is the time.
Jim
It is now several hours later than when I wrote the first part of this post
and I have accomplished nothing. I downloaded SP-2 to a file in my "good"
computer but have had no luck in transfering it to the problem computer. I
have tried cable to cable, the ethernet network, I couldn't even get the
file onto a cd. I kept getting msgs saying that there is no cd in the tray
when I just put one there. I'll just take it to my isp and see if he can
figure something out.
Thanks for your help.
Jim

Well, I took the prob. computer to my isp and he got a T1 connection going
and downloaded SP-2 and it corrected the main problem! Thanks for the
suggestion! I still might have a minor issue with the modem, as I am still
having trouble setting up the communications for UPS, but I will get with
their tech support and try to solve that.
Thanks for your help.
Jim
