Hi, help please.

Just moved to XP from Windows 98 having problems from
disconnecting from Internet. The disconnect box does not
always appear when i want to log off, which requires me
to restart the pc to disconnect.

On 98 there was a connection icon in the bottom right
tool bar, is their something similar in xp and if so how
do i include it in the toolbar - have tried looking
around for it without success.

Thanks in anticipation.

Keith

From control panel, open network connections. Right click your connection
and select properties. Put a check next to 'show icon...'.
To enable auto disconnect go to control panel|internet
options|connections|settings|advanced and check 'disconnect when connection
may no longer be needed'.

You don't need to restart the PC, gees, at the very least you can unplug the
phone line. There is an icon on your task bar that you can click on to bring
up your connection and allow you to click to disconnect. What ISP do you use
and how do you log on in the first place?

Do you mean the little twin screen icon in the system tray (near the
clock)? I found that mine was more likely to disappear when I had my
modem speed set past 57600.

Incidentally, although inconvenient you can disconnect by going to the
control panel \ network and right-clicking your ISP name. There's an
option to (dis)connect.

Before an always on connection, I kept a shortcut for my connection in my
Quick Launch bar. Clicking on it when the connection was active would bring
up a screen with the Disconnect button. Similar to what you've suggested
but a few less steps.

To get the little monitors down the bottom right hand corner. Go to START -
CONTROL PANEL - NETWORK CONNECTIONS.
Right click your dial-up connection and hit properties. Now tick the box
down the bottom that says "Show icon in notification area when connected"
Hope this helps. Let me know how you go.
