Hi, I don't know if this is the right place for this so if not I'd
appreciate if you could point me in the right direction.

On my PC I'm having trouble maintaining a diap up connection. For some
reason the line keeeps dropping and I have to reconnect. I haven't a
clue what it is, because I'm always surfing/ downloading when it
happens so it's not an idle limit.

If any one knows a solution or even an explanation it would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Kyle

(I know broadband is the ultimate solution but that's what I get for
living in the arse end of Ireland!!)

We don't really have enough information to give you focused
troubleshooting. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Make sure the ISP isn't putting limits on your connection time.
2. Make sure the computer is 100% virus/malware-free:

3. Update your modem drivers.
4. Swap out the cable going to the phone jack.
5. Try a different phone jack in the house.
6. If the phone wiring is old, this could be causing the problem.
Contact the telephone company, although they usually only have to
provide good voice connections and data requires better than voice.
7. If the modem is old, replace it. I don't know the cost of a new modem
in Ireland, but you can get one here for around $25USD.

As always, first ask yourself "what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't" and if you can pinpoint an event, try
and reverse whatever you did (installed software, etc.). Make only one
change at a time and test after each change.

Do you have "Call Waiting" on this line?
If so, use what ever instructions from your Telco to disable it before you
dial your ISP.

As you are using 'dial up' frequent line drops may be because of poor line
quality(in that case contact ur phone company) or else try updating your
modem drivers.
Just to be on safer side you can also run a spyware scan to rule out trojan.

Is there an extension on the phone line you are using? People picking up an
extension will cause a disconnect.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It's only a new computer and I scan
regularlly for malware/ spyware/ viruses etc so I'm happy that isn't
the reason. The intervals between disconnections appear pretty
consistant so I'm going with a possible ISP setting or even the call
waiting suggestion.

I'm gonna give the phone company a shout (same company runs phone &
ISP). It's looking as though internet connections take a back seat from
voice lines. "Once we can talk on the phone isn't it enough??, sure the
interenet is just an added bonus" seems to be the common attitude!

Kyle,

I see that you appear to be in Dublin. Even though that's not the UK, strictly,
maybe there will be some help for you in the BBR UK Broadband Forum at
<http://www.dslreports.com/forum/ukbb>.
