i HAVE WINDOWS XP. TO USE DIACRITICS I AM SUPPOSED TO ALIGN THE CURSOR TO
THE LEFT OF THE CHARACTER THEN PRESS SHIFT AND THE LEFT/RIGHT ARROW KEYS.
NOTHING HAPPENS. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANK YOU..DAVID

Where did you read that this would work? Holding the shift key and moving
the left arrow then the right will do nothing as you just selected to the
left and then backed up to the right. Generally if you want any special
characters you could do a =CHR(XXX) or holding the ALT key and typing in the
3 to 4 digit number on the number pad. What are you trying to display?

And just a side note please never post in all caps. A lot of people will
not even read a post in all caps. It comes across as yelling.

Thanks for the answer...in Microsoft Excel "Help" under "diacritics/ligation"
it states "place cursor to left of charcter, shift and right or left arrow
keys" ...David

No you aren't. You do that to select the item. Which is the exact same way to select any character.

Select diacritics or ligated characters
Language-specific information

1.. Click to the left of the character whose diacritic or ligation you want to select.

2.. Hold down the SHIFT key and press the RIGHT ARROW key once for each diacritic or ligation.
Tip To select more than one diacritic or ligated character, hold down the SHIFT key and press the RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW key once for each diacritic or ligated character.

I see this in Excel Help:

Select diacritics or ligated characters
Show All
Hide All
The feature or some of the options described in this Help topic are
only available if support for right-to-left (right-to-left: Refers to
keyboard settings, document views, user interface objects, and the direction
in which text is displayed. Arabic and Hebrew are right-to-left languages.)
languages is enabled through Microsoft Office Language Settings.

1.. In your file, click to the left of the character whose diacritic
(diacritics: Markings that are printed above, below, or next to a character
that indicate how to pronounce it.) or ligation you want to select.
2.. Hold down the SHIFT key, and then press the RIGHT ARROW or LEFT
ARROW key once for each diacritic or ligation.

Note the words "if support for right-to-left ... languages is
enabled." Do you have it enabled?

Hi ken, what's the weird attachment to your post?

Beats me. I didn't do it on purpose. It's apparently an artifact of my
having cut and pasted what I thought was just text from Excel Help.

Sorry.
