I have a cable modem which requires a specific IP address.
however the DHCP function on my computer is enabled and
wants to find a new IP address about every 30 minutes.
This of course kicks me off line, or will not locate the
required IP address unless I reboot the computer. How do
I disable the DHCP function and get my IP address to be
recognized?

Hi Mike,

Have you had this very long? If you just got it, did a service rep.
set it up? Your DHCP Client should be set to Automatic and should
start when the computer is booted. Your cable modem should have a
dynamic I.P. address, but with most cable providers using dynamic
addresses, they remain static until there is a need for the server
to seek a new I.P. To reset the modem, unplug it at the power outlet
for 3 minutes and shut the computer down. Plug in the modem and let
it seek an I.P. and complete booting. Then start your computer, and
it should go online fine, if nothing is screwed up in the programs
that use the modem.

Not very much help. But I will monitor the thread.

Hi mike,

I see you posted before this. Please give these folks a chance to
help before reposing. They are a great bunch, but get rubbed raw by
things like this. Thank you for helping out.

Hi Mike, responses are in-line.

Your cable modem should be either hard wired for it's IP address or it
should get it's IP address from the cable co's DHCP server. Neither you
nor your computer have any control in this area.

DHCP client services are controlled by TCP/IP properties for the local
area connection. You can choose to "Obtain an address automatially",
DHCP, or "Use the following address" in which case you must fill in a
fixed IP address. Don't confuse this address with the IP address of the
cable modem, they're of necessity different addresses.

If your computer is running a flavor of Windows 2000 Server and the
server is configured for DHCP, then all you need to do is change the
lease time in the affected DHCP scope.

Reacquiring a lease on your IP address shouldn't have the effect of
kicking you off line, nor should you have to reboot your computer. The
vast majority of the time, you'll be assigned the same IP address as you
had before.

I suspect your problem lies elswhere.
