DHCP - connection problem

I've got a windows XP home PC. It's all up-to-date with patches, AV and
firewall.

I've got a cable modem (NTL Ireland).

Now, the modem works fine. I can connect it to a laptop and it gets an IP
address and connection.

On the PC it won't seem to pick up an IP address.

I've tried -

c:\>ipconfig /release
c:\>ipconfig /renew

It doesn't get an address. Sometimes it does get an address, but this is
not within the range used by the ISP, and has no gateway nor DNS.

I did a system restore back to a time when everything worked fine.

I installed newer drivers for the network card (Intel Pro/100)

Nothing seems to work. I've powered off the PC and modem and restarted them.

Anyone have any ideas? Both the ISP and PC support are confused and blame
each other.

It says that it's unable to establish a full connection.

There are no errors associated with the network device in the control
panel/devices.

So you are connecting with a cat5e and NIC card. Check your TCP/IP to
see if it is set to obtain IP addressess automatically.

1) Rigt click on the Local area Connection
2) Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
3) Click Properties

hth

Yep, Cat5, over NIC.

It's set for DHCP - server assigned IP address, server assigned DNS. No date
in the WINS settings.

It just can't seem to pick up an IP address.

Ok try to put in IP addresses manually to see if it works. This is just
to see if there is something wrong with the system - a temporary
solution!

So you will need to change from automatic to "use these IP addresses"

I connected another computer (laptop) to the cable modem. It worked fine.

I took the IP address details and manually put them in to the TCPIP settings
on the PC.

Same issue. It wouldn't connect out through it.

I'm seeing link lights on the NIC itself.

But, the PC doesn't seem to be taking the details.

Well, then this proves that something is amiss in the hardware. Have
you checked in the harware profile if there are any problems high
lighted?

Righ-Click on My Computer
Properties
Harware
Device Manager
Network Adaptors

Now try to uninstall your NIC card, Reboot the system and Windows will
load the drivers again.

See if this helps.

There are no hardware errors marked.

I've already removed the device and reinstalled it.

I've also reinstalled it with newer drivers.

No effect.

Well, AVG is the anti-virus and detects nothing, and the machine has
ZoneAlarm as the firewall. It should be fairly well protected.

I'll check and see though.

This problem is really confusing me.

There seems to be a route in the system for 169.254.0.0 to gateway
169.254.181.58

Now, I've no idea where either of these addresses come from. I've never
used any 169 addresses on the machine.

I connected the machine to a Linksys wireless router, and it picks up the
correct DHCP address from it of 192.168.1.100 (as I set in the config of the
router), and then it can access the internet correctly.

I did try using that tool to fix winsock, but no success. It's still
finding this weird route and then won't find the cable modem IP (82.224 etc).

Any ideas??

The address in 169 range is assigned by XP whenever DNS is not available
(Automatic Private IP Addressing). APIPA does not provide for DNS or
gateway settings - it provides communication between computers on the same
network and not outside of the network e.g. internet. Routers provide DNS
thereby providing internet access.
