Hi to ALL,

I recently built a new machine with Win XP and Office
XP. Initially, Excel was fast (It was almost
instantaneous) to open other directories in the OPEN
dialog box. Now, a month & a half later, it's a dog.

Has anybody else seen this & maybe know what to do about
it?

Further in my observations, Windows Explorer seems to be
still quite responsive.

NOTE: I use Scandisk, Defrag & and current LiveUpdate
Symantec/Norton's Disk Optimizer regularly with no effect
on this issue. I only see the problem in Office products
(Just checked Word & Notepad - Word's just as bad -
NotePad's quick).

Best Regards,
Walt

You mentioned Norton... Are you referring to antivirus? If so, consider
disabling the Office Addin for Norton AV.

You may also find that disabling "Script Blocking" will improve performance
considerably.

Good luck!

Hi /i.,

I'm not familiar with scripting - where do I look to see
if "Script Blocking" is on?

As to the Norton question, yes, I do use NAV, but there's
no addin listed.

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

Best Regards,
Walt

Open Norton, select options, then in the next window to the left there
should be a few system options where script blocking is one,
select that and in the next window uncheck script blocking.

Hi Peo,

Thanks. I can see some improvement - still not what it
was with the Script Blocking on a month ago.

Does Office XP Pro use some different indexing to the
directory / files structure than other applications or
Windows Explorer? Is there a way to rebuild it? I add
and delete files - often by the hundreds per day - for
testing and development (Hence regular defrags). And, I
can see this might be at the root of my problem.

Best Regards,
Walt
