Since upgrading from 98SE to XP my Adaptec SCSI adapter and the CD R/W drive
attached to it don't appear in the device manager (and don't work).

Any idea why and what I should do, please?

It appears that XP does not have a driver for the Yamaha, but that I could
find it elsewhere.

DL gave you good advice including a link . Download the .exe file to your
desktop , run the .exe file and then reboot. You may be lucky but dont count
on it.
 
Yes, I know and I followed it. But the .exe file leads to unzipping and
then I can't see any .exe file that will install a driver.

So, I'm still stuck.

I rtebooted but all stays the same. First, I can't reboot at all: the usual
opening information about the Motherboard do not come up. Just a black
screen; then after several tries it starts and goes into the Bios with
warning about the CPU speed, which loooks fine. I save and go on and
usually it then starts normally, but still not the missing CD ROM/Scsi drive

Ok, I perservered and now after downloading the .exe file onto the Desktop
and unzipping it and restarting a couple of times I now have the drive in
the Device Manager with a Yellow icon.

Uninstalling and trying to reinstall comes up with a problem.

I suppose it now means that I either have the wrong SCSI driver or need a
further driver for the Yamaha drive.

can you help?

What model is the Yamaha drive?

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information about
your computer:

Did you follow the link to Adaptec drivers page, and did you install the
win2k driver?

If yes to both and the Adaptec Device is still not seen, then you will have
to replace the Adaptec Device Card with one that is compatible with WinXP

Thank you everybody

Finally I got everything working. Not too sure how but it seems that it followed the instructions I got from DL and the MS page Peter Foldes.

The Device Manager did not show the SCSI adapter nor the CD drive but after going through Method 2 and ...On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes, they appeared magically and so far it works.

I'm nervous about shutting down the system in case they go again, but I'm slowly getting somewhere.
