Aftermath

I need to uninstall my present modem so that I can install a new one. When
I open the Device Manager, the list of installed devices opens and closes
repeatedly. I pressed Ctrl, Alt, Delete and it showed that the Device
Manager was Responding, then Not Responding repeatedly. Going back to the
Device Manager, I was able to stop the repetition by right-clicking on one
of the listed items. I could then select the item I wanted. As soon as I
made the selection, the repetition began again. Using this procedure, I was
able to get to the screen where I could Uninstall the modem. I did not
continue with the uninstall, because I did not know whether it was safe to
do so at this point. I would appreciate knowing why the Device Manager is
acting in this way and how to correct it. I know that this is not normal
for the Device Manager since I have used it before, and it was stable. My
OS is Windows 2000 Professional.

Any Event Viewer errors? System virus free?

What if you access Device Manager in this fashion:

right-click My Computer om Desktop | Manage | Device Manager

Still get the hang or the window closes?

Same thing happens.

My computer is scanned daily with "avast", and I ran "housecall" twice. All
showed no viruses. I also scan with AdAware, spybot, spyblaster, and
Microsoft AntiSpyware. All showed no spyware. Any other information would
be appreciated.

That computer manage window just closes? Hmmm...sounds like a virus to me.
